TAKE UP A TOWEL, & WASH FEET

HEY Y’ALL!!! Long time no see.
I have tried to sit down a couple of instances to write, but today I have something pressing on my heart that I NEED to share! I would advise you to grab a metaphorical towel to soak up this Word, and you might just need it physically in a couple of minutes ;)
Did you know that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, washed people’s feet? Hours before he was going to be crucified, Jesus “got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist… he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:4-5
& GET THIS,
Back in Jesus’ day, people wore sandals outside in the dirt, in the sand and in the grimy streets. Additionally, we can’t overlook the fact that the way of transportation were animals like horses, oxen, donkeys, and camels; unlike today, where we see Toyotas, Teslas, Fords, and Ferraris filling the streets. Consequently, there wasn’t just mud on those roads, if you know what I mean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, when people came inside, their feet were disgusting, (not like our freshly pedicured, birkenstock wearing feet.) If you need a visual look up Jandals (Jesus sandals), and picture walking through dung in those- that is what the disciples feet resembled.
Jesus knew that He was about to be crucified, betrayed by one of his disciples, and denied by the very individual whose feet He was washing at this moment. However, none of that stopped him from taking up a towel, and washing feet.
“Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. ‘You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:12-17
This is the main lesson I have learned over these past two weeks at my FCA internship: No matter what, take up a towel and wash feet. Sometimes, this saying might be taken literally if you see a kid who hurt their foot. Other times, washing feet could mean carrying a grandma’s groceries to her car, or helping a friend out when they are stressed.
Jesus intentionally sets this example for us so that we know how to love others well. Personally, I know I can do a way better job at being a servant, and I am excited to get to washing! I hope that after reading this, you are too :) As always, reach out, keep seeking, and know that you got a friend in me! With all my love, Delaney Dilfer
